![]() The initial twelve-member cast included Matthew Morrison as club director and Spanish teacher Will Schuester, Jane Lynch as scheming cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, Jayma Mays as guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury, Jessalyn Gilsig as Will's wife Terri, and the eight original club members, including Dianna Agron as Quinn Fabray, a popular cheerleader whose biggest struggle is her teenage pregnancy Chris Colfer as Kurt Hummel, a gay boy who feels conflicted by his sexuality and is bullied at school Kevin McHale as Artie Abrams, who lives with a physical disability Lea Michele as Rachel Berry, driven by her dreams of becoming a Broadway theatre star and the glee club's most obvious star singer Cory Monteith as Finn Hudson, the school's star quarterback who sometimes appears not to be very smart Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones, an African American girl who endeavors to be recognized for her talents and dreams of being a vocal diva Mark Salling as Noah Puckerman, a teenage delinquent in need of direction and Jenna Ushkowitz as Tina Cohen-Chang, a shy girl of Korean descent who longs to be popular and sometimes experiences racism. It centers on the glee club called the New Directions at the fictional William McKinley High School which competes as a show choir while its disparate members deal with social issues, especially regarding sexuality, race, family, teen relationships and teamwork. Whether it was the plaintiveness of "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," the Latin vitality of the "Tarantella," the longing for God's presence in "Soon, ah will be done," or the memorable juxtaposing of prayerfulness and love for one's mother in Victoria's "Ave Maria," each number was rendered with poise and talent.Glee (stylized as glee) is an American musical comedy-drama television series that aired on the Fox network in the United States from May 19, 2009, to March 20, 2015. There was a zest in their performances which belied ten days on the road. The quartet in one picture included Pat Babka from Omaha, Kaipo Punahele, a native Hawaiian, Joe Dziedzic from Minneapolis and Enrique (Henry) Bernardo from the Philippines and Indonesia. Members came from various states and foreign countries. Thomas Williams of I Canterbury, England, provided sparkling piano support and at one point Maestro Ring yielded his baton to Andy Druckenbrod. In this case, Chris Mehl and Mark White, among others not noticed, expressed themselves at moments with an animation and joy that warmed the hearts of all present. Yet even on a team, there are moments for individuals. It is hard to single out individuals in such a concert because a glee club is a team effort. And when they closed with "Notre Dame, Our Mother" and the more famous "Victory March, as all their concerts do, they graciously invited two local alumni who had once sung in their ranks, Ed Aubrey '40 and Terry Vollmer '51, to sing with them. One could find hymns by 16th century masters such as Benjamin Britten and Aaron Copland and Maestro Ring's mentor, Fenno Heath. Clad in tuxes, the singers spiced their program with variety. ![]() ![]() They were the Notre Dame Glee Club led by one of the more recent additions to the faculty, Tennessee-born and Yale-educated Mark Ring. The youngsters were concluding a ten-stop tour and, by the next day, they would be on their way back to Notre Dame. A tantalizing array of home-cooked foods awaited them and, after they made short work of these vitalizing victuals, they moved into the hall and filled it with music.
